  • Control the empire through the navy and stop expansion.
  • Avoid hoplite warfare as Spartans could not be beaten

What was Athenians money problem?

A

2000 talents OUT was running cost of empire, plus 420 talents OUT a year for soldiers.

Going in was 1000 per year 600 tribute, 400 taxes, 500 in coins and 6000 in treasury.

Eventually was going to run out of money, meaning tributes and rsss would be raised and less people would want to fight for Athens

-Pericles dies

-30% of hoplite died. 1/3rd of Athens dead

-People lost hope, dead bodies everywhere, no respect burials

-People believed the plague was punishment for Pericles pride and arrogance, they found fault with him and wanted to make peace with Sparta despite Pericles stating that the plan was working.
