Peer review/The economy Flashcards
What is peer review?
The process by which psychological research is assessed by other experts in the same field before any publication
What are the strengths of peer review?
Validity check - ensures accuracy of research
Prevents fraud - looks for false findings
Improving research - gives constructive criticism
Assessing relevance - if the research adds value to the field
What are the limitations of peer review?
Bias - reviewers may favour familiar ideas
Anonymity issue - leads to harsh criticism
Slows publication - can be time consuming
What are the strengths of the economy?
Criminal justice system - EWT and offender profiling improve legal processes (reduces crime + saves cost)
Education - Research into memory and learning styles helps improve student outcomes (better future work-force)
Mental health treatments - Research into CBT and drug therapies can reduce time off work which can increase productivity.
What are the limitations of the economy?
Effectiveness varies - what works in research may not work in the real world setting hence reducing cost-effectiveness
High cost of implementation - some very effective treatments e.g: therapy can be expensive to provide on a larger scale
Long-term impacts unclear - some interventions may take years to show any economic benefit
