what is peer review
A
assessment of scientific work by experts in the same field to make sure all resrach is done to a high quality

what are the main purposes of peer review?
A
- know which research is worthwhile to allocate funding to
- validate the relevance and quality of research
- suggest improvements or ammendments

A
- reviewers use it to settle old scores or bury rivals if theyre competing for funds, so anonymity affects objectivity of reviewers

-publish headline grabbing findings and positive results –> file drawer problem where negative results arent published
