Comprehensive program that helps employee resolve personal problems that may adversely impact their work performance, conduct, health and overall well-being. PEAP address problems in the quickest, least restrictive and most convenient manner while minimizing cost and protecting client confidentiality.

When should supervisors make an IMMEDIATE PEAP notification?

A
  1. LVMPD Employee victim of person crime (robbery, DV etc)
  2. LVMPD Employee has been arrested for a crime
  3. If an employee has been involved in a stressful event during work shift and the supervisor feels the employee or the team need additional resources to process the event.
    * Could just be a follow up call or could be a debrief at the scene.
    * Point is to diffuse lingering stress if possible.
    * Can be used for EVERYONE involved (PSR’s, CSA’s, call takers, dispatchers and even LEST’s who spoke with victims/suspects.
    * All can be equally affected. PEAP provides tools so we can look out for one another and survive stress of LE career.

  1. Immediate family member death
  2. Employee or immediate family diagnosed with serious illness
  3. Employee exhibited poor performance which you believe may be due to personal stressors.
  4. An employee has shared that they have an immediate family member who is suffering a debilitating illness or dementia.
  5. Employee having issues with children, parents or extended family that are potentially affecting members ability to do their job
  6. Anytime employee responded to, witnessed(including phone/radio) a crime where supervisor believes the employee has been affected by the event and needs PEAP
  7. Employee experiencing life stressor whee you feel PEAP may be able to provide resources (Marital status, gambling, alcohol etc)
  8. Employee was the victim of a crime and has court proceedings they must attend
  9. Supervisor would like assistance in speaking with an employee regarding PEAP.
    * Pretty much fucking anything dude.

Nope

  • They will not break the confidentiality of the employee to include discussing whether the employee has chosen to take recommendations for assistance.
  • Call them and let them handle it. You can check up on your troop and ask “How you doing?” “Need anything”.

Can employees on administrative leave attend briefings and squad training?

A

Yes

  • If allowed by CIRT after OIS.
  • Cannot be in uniform or in patrol vehicles
  • Include people on admin leave. It sucks for them, keep them in the loop with texts etc
  • Dont ask them when they will be back to work. Not shit they can do.

Be a “connected” supervisor:

A
  1. One of the best things a supervisor can do is create a connection with individual team members and their team as a whole
  2. Get to know them. (who are they, where do they want to be)
  3. Know if they have family, kids, wives etc
  4. Make time each month for coffee, BS sessions.
  5. Taking time to get to know them makes them feel appreciated and supported.
  6. You’ll recognize changes in behavior if your connected.
  7. You’ll be a better leader.

  • Often takes supervisors/employees noticing small differences (weight loss/gain, giving away personal items, lost interest etc).
  • If someone comes to you about suicide we owe it to them to get involved.

A
  1. Become aware of incident or situation affecting a member who represents and potential risk of harm to self or others.
  2. Evaluate information and do prelim investigation.
  3. If determined potential risk of harm to self or others, place member on admin leave “Active duty status may be detrimental to your current assignment with department”.
  4. Words “member crisis intervention” will not be on form.
  5. Consult Bureau commander, or WC
  6. If imminent danger…legal them.
  7. Contact PEAP for immediate response. Only tell PEAP and PPA that an incident as defined by this procedure occurred.
