School-age physical development
Organs and the immune system are mature
4-6lbs/yr, 2in/yr
- Boys are larger until 11-12y/o, then girls increase, usually thinner/lankier
- Body weight is primarily muscle, once fat diminishes; by the end of the period, children are double their strength and physical capabilities and develop coordination
- Proportions make activities more efficient/easy
Decreased head and waist circumference, but increased height
Face and teeth grow faster than the skull, “ugly duckling”
- Lose deciduous (primary) teeth, obtain permanent teeth (secondary)
- 32 teeth total
- Secondary permanent molars @ 12 y/o
- Third permanent
Tooth care is important
Decreased HR, RR, and BP
Increased height, but bones are not completely formed (fractures)
Prepubescent
~9y/o, 2 yr prior to puberty
- Sexual maturation varies, girls before boys; rapid growth in height and weight
- Source of embarrassment for girls when they get their periods, “becoming a woman”
