Pediatric Hip Ultrasound Flashcards
Normal capsule to bone distance for hip?
Normal capsule to bone distance for hip?
Capsule to bone distance in hip effusion?
usually >5mm
What is DDH?
Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip
DDH affects what percent of infants?
1-2%
Which hip is most often affected by DDH?
left hip 3 X’s more than right hip
Is DDH more common in males or females?
females
Indications of DDH: (9)
- breech presentation
- hip click
- multiple gestations
- family history
- asymmetric skin creases
- abnormal hip clinical exam
- high birth weight
- oligohydramnios
What is Galeazzi sign?
short femoral segment with hip and knee flexed
When (age) do we ultrasound for DDH?
birth to 4-6 months, but ideally at 2 weeks

For DDH study, what are we examining in coronal view?
acetabular shape
For DDH study, what are we examining in transverse view?
the stability of the femoral head with and without stress
In coronal hip scan, hip should be flexed to
90 degrees
What is Barlow’s test?
pistoning the knee posteriorly
What is a normal alpha angle?
> or = to 60 degrees
Alpha angle is obtained by the intersection of
the roof of the bony acetabulum and the ileum
