Pediatric Condition Flashcards
Hydrocephalus
Build up fluid in the brain
Cerebral Palsy
group of disorders that affect a person’s ability to move and maintain balance and posture. Affects tones and posture.
Developmental disability.
The most common motor disability in childhood.
Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL)
Damages to the white matter in the brain due to restriction in blood supply to the brain tissue.
Necrosis
Death of cells or tissue through disease or injury.
Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE)
loss of oxygen leading to damage to brain tissue.
Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH)
bleeding into the brain’s ventricular system.
Cerebral (brain) dysgenesis
dys (bad, difficult)
genesis ( development, beginning)
brain malformation
Hypertonicity
High muscle tone
increased resistance
difficulty to fully extend
Hypotonicity
Low muscle tone
extensively extend
difficulty flexing
no resistance
Fluctuating tone
shift from hypo-hyper tone
Clonus
involuntary muscle spasm.
the highest form of hyperreflexia
Clonus
involuntary muscle spasm.
the highest form of hyperreflexia
Areflexia
condition in which your muscles don’t respond to stimuli. Areflexia is the opposite of hyperreflexia. That’s when your muscles overreact to stimuli. A reflex is an involuntary and rapid movement of a part of your body in response to a change in environment (stimuli)
TYPES OF CP
Spastic
Hypertonicity
retained primitive reflexes
most common
