What is peat
Peat is partially decomposed animals and plants that has been waterlogged.
What colour is peat
Peat is molstly black
What are the 2 types of bogs
There is
-a raised bog
And
- a blanket bog
What are the different types of peat plants
There is sphagnum moss, bladderwort , sundew , bog cotton , heather , sedges and grasses
What animals are there in a peatland ecosystem
There is
Curlew, snipe , hen harrier , frog , pond skater , beetle , raft spider , hare , rabbit , grouse , fox , meadow pipe , skylark and a badger.
How are peatlands being destroyed
Cutting turf, especially by machines, for fuel to burn in homes.
People like the texture of peat for gardening and so it is milled, bagged and sold in garden centres.
Dumping rubbish – because the land is viewed as waste land.
Grazing sheep – farmers want to use mountain fields to generate income.
Draining bogs for planting trees or forests.
Why should we protect peatlands
Peatlands contain rare plants only found in bogs.
They also provide habitats for numerous insects birds and animals.
They have even preserved artefacts and bodies.
