The constant reflection on the values that give rise to actions in a group, and shaping and reshaping of actions and interactions to reflect those values
What underlying assumptions behind the theoretical framework of peace and power?
**These assumptions are based on generally practiced cultural norms of Western society and in all cultures where there is gender disparity
1) All human relationships involve the use of power
2) Typically there is one person, or a group of people, who have relative power in any group structure and therefore ten to eb able to exert their will, or their vlaues, on those with less power
3) People seek a space to life where they are relatively free from competition and power imbalances, and where cooperation and peace pervails
4) In typical Western societies, the public realm tends to be associated with with male power, with the ability to exercise one’s will in the world, with that which is strong,, powerful, and savvy.
5) Conflict in inevitable in all human relationships
6) People recognize teh value of cooperative ways of working together
How is power dealt with in effective groups?
Successful groups acquire ways to negotiate and deal with power differentials in ways that are satisfying or all who are involved in the group
Do constructive approaches to conflict guarantee positive outcomes for the relationship?
No, but they do provide for individual and collective growth that leads to positive change

The energy from which human action and interaction arises
What is power-over power? Where is this subgroup of power predominantly practiced?
Use of rules, hierarchy, command, result (ends justify the means) and expediency
- in public sphere
What is peace power? Where is this subgroup of power predominantly practiced?
Use of sharing, nurturing, integration of all points of view, distribution of resources, and diversity
- in private sphere
**Both types of power are experienced in both spheres of life & there is overlap between the private and public spheres
How is conflict typically viewed in public sphere?
In the private?
As adversarial, where one group ultimately becomes winner, and the other loser
Those involved view conflict as opportunity for growth, and focus on ways to achieve an outcome that best expressed their shared values

Principles of solidarity
Represent the group’s shared values and commitments; a foundation for all other components of the process.
Check-in
Each person speaks briefly to share their ability and commitment to participate in the process, and your expectations for the time the group is together.
Rotating leadership
Everyone participates as leader and follower. Person speaking is chair during the time they are speaking. Every voice is heard.
Value-based decision-making
Based upon principles of solidarity. All options considered. Minority views are encouraged. Decision selected from mutual agreement on the best option.
