- The word is Islam is derived from ‘aslama’, which means to surrender or submit, so Islam is the religion of submission to the will of God
- However the consonants ‘s-l-m’ are those of ‘salaam’ which means peace, so there is a close connection between Islam and peace
- One meaning of the word Islam is peace
- The greeting used by all Muslims when they meet each other is ‘salaam alaykum’ – meaning ‘may peace be with you’

What are Muslim attitudes towards peace?
A
- Followers of Islam believe that their religion brings them a peaceful life, which comes about when they obey God’s call and live by the moral values set by God, so that compassion, mercy, peace and love can be experienced all over the world
- Muslims refer to those countries where Islam is the national religion as ‘the abode of peace’, while countries outside Islam are called ‘the abode of war’
- One of the attributes of God described in the Qur’an is ‘peace and security’, which means that for Muslims, God’s being itself is a manifestation of peace
- According to Surah 5:16, divine guidance is like a path of peace in paradise
- Paradise, an abode of peace, is the ultimate destination for Muslims: ‘For them will be a home of peace in the presence of their Lord’ (Surah 6:127)
