peace and conflict Flashcards
Human rights
basic claims and entitlements that one should be granted on the basis of being a human being. Thought to be the basis for a life of dignity. Essential doctrines, like UDHR have been criticized as having a western bias.
Justice
associated with the idea of fairness. The idea of individuals, parties, states or other groups getting what they deserve in response to actions. Just responses may be positive or negative. Decisions of justice can be contested.
Equality
All human people and groups have the same value, and deserve access to the same rights.
Inequality
a state of affairs where equality is not reached. Often manifests itself through lack of access to resources.
peace
Both the absence of conflict, and a state of harmonious affairs. From a liberalist perspective, the ultimate goal of states and organizations. From a realist perspective, a nice aspiration, but unlikely to function well in global political affairs.
conflict
The manifestation of actual or perceived opposition between two or more parties. Could be physical or more tension-based. Common sources are positions, interests, values, ideologies etc.
violence
Physical or psychological force purposely afflicted upon an individual, group, or being. Could be a physical action taken to hurt another, or restrict their full potential. or could be sustained ignorance of problems.
non-violence
The active practice of attempting to limit violence against others. Includes actively opposing the system, fighting to strengthen human rights and drawing attention to violence in order to get higher levels of public attention. More attention leads to a higher chance of positive action, as institutions will attempt not to be seen as illegitimate.
peace building
Peacebuilding is the development of constructive personal, group, and political relationships across ethnic, religious, class, national, and racial boundaries. It aims to resolve injustice in nonviolent ways and to transform the structural conditions that generate deadly conflict.
peace making
Peacemaking generally includes measures to address conflicts in progress and usually involves diplomatic action to bring hostile parties to a negotiated agreement.
peace keeping
the preserving of peace especially : international enforcement and supervision of a truce between hostile states or communities. The preservation of positive peace.
