PE Y10 CT3 Flashcards
What is aerobic exercise?
Aerobic exercise is exercise with oxygen being given to the working muscles e.g. 5km run
What is anaerobic exercise?
exercise without oxygen being sent to the working muscles e.g. 100m sprint
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen → Energy + Carbon Dioxide + Water
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose → Energy + Lactic Acid.
Why is lactic acid produced in anaerobic exercise?
Lactic acid is a waste product from anaerobic respiration
What is oxygen debt (EPOC)?
Oxygen debt, also known as EPOC (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption), is a temporary oxygen shortage in the body
How long can oxygen debt last?
can be several hours but depends on intensity and duration of exercise
What are the immediate effects of exercise?
Heart rate increase, stroke volume increase, breathing rate
What are short-term effects of exercise?
Fatigue, tiredness, dizziness, light headedness, nausea, DOMS
What is DOMS?
DOMS stands for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness
What is a cramp?
A cramp is an involuntary muscle contraction that can cause pain and discomfort.
How can you prevent fatigue and cramps?
cool down, rehydration, ice baths, and massage.
What does a cool down involve?
A cool down should consist of walking or jogging followed by static stretching.
What are the benefits of a cool down?
Clears waste products, reduces potential for DOMS
What is rehydration?
Rehydration is the process of replacing fluids lost during exercise
What is the purpose of an ice bath after exercise?
Ice baths reduce swelling, constrict blood vessels and flush out lactic acid
How does massage help in recovery?
Massage increases blood flow to muscles, reduces swelling, and helps prevent DOMS.
What are the long-term effects of exercise?
Reduced body weight, muscle hypertrophy, stronger tendons and ligaments
What is hypertrophy?
Hypertrophy is the increase in size of muscles or the heart due to long-term exercise.
What is bradycardia?
Bradycardia is the term for a lowered resting heart rate
