Underhand Serve

A
Preparation Phase
Non-dominant foot should be forward
Hold ball in non-dominant palm
Ball at waist level, bending over
Shoulders square to the net
Keep eye on ball

Execution Phase
Arm swings straight back & weight shifts back
Arm swings straight forward & weight shifts forward
Contact the ball at waist level, do not lift the ball up
Shift weight from the back foot to the front foot on contact
Do not toss the ball
Contact the ball below the center, back of the ball, not under it
Strike with the heel of the hand

Follow Through Phase
Weight should be on front foot
Arm pointing at the target

Forearm Pass or Bump

A

**purpose is to receive the serve & pass the ball to the setter at the net in order to set up the attacker
Preparation Phase
Athletic stance - weight on ball of the feet
Right hand in palm for right handed people
Arms together & locked, making a flat platform
Bend slightly at the waist

Execution Phase
Turn shoulders to the target - set both feet behind the ball
Follow arms to the ball & move forward
Contact the ball with your lower forearms, just above the wrists
Shrug shoulder - do not swing the arms
Keep feet on the floor, may have to move to the ball, but do NOT cross your feet
Cushion the ball if it is coming in hard

Overhead Pass or Set

A

** purpose is to set the hitter at the net with a high & accurate ball to set up the attack
Preparation Phase
Athletic stance
Knees & hips bent slightly
Shoulders & feet square to target
Hands in front of forehead, wrists cocked, & fingers open - thumbs and index fingers should make a diamond
Elbows are bent & at chin level

Execution Phase
Beat the ball to the spot
Wrists recoil at contact (just above forehead) & extend upwards toward target
Freeze with arms fully extended, hands are the same distance apart upon completion as they were during contacts
Hands follow the ball

Follow Through Phase
Wrists recoil at contact with the ball & extend upwards towards target

Rules

A

Rally scoring
Players rotate clockwise
5 consecutive serves
Lines are good
Walls, ceilings, & backboards are out, unless a player hits it on their own side
If a teammate hits an out of bounds ball, PLAY IT!
3 hits per side - the same person can not hit it twice in a row
If at any time the ball hits the net & goes over, it is legal
Rotate on the first serve

Illegal hits and Violations

A

Lift - when your hands are below your shoulders with palms facing the ceiling or your hands are not together in a forearm pass. Solution: use ONE fist if your hands are below your waist or a forearm pass
Carry - When your hands are above your shoulders & you “throw” the ball & do not hit it or if you set to the side. Solution: make quick contact with finger pads, not palms, & set in front of your body
A player cannot touch the net with any part of their body
A player cannot step on the line while serving, they must be behind the line
The ball cannot rest on your palms during a set
