PE tidbits Flashcards
Bainbridge reflex
thought to be component of RSA – inspiration cause HR to speed up d/t vagal tone decrease as LA filling pressure increases and negative thoracic pressure increases (Bainbridge = increase in LA pressure decreases vagal tone to increase HR?) – Increase in venous return accelerates HR. (Stretch of SA node sinus tachycardia per Katz)
Delirium cordis
irregularly irregular rhythm of afib
Reynold’s number
relationship of murmurs to vessel size, flow velocity and blood viscosity
= (Radius x velocity x density) / viscosity
Parvus et tardus
small/weak pulses with delayed systolic peak (e.g., SAS)
Corrigan’s pulse
bounding, “water hammer” pulses e.g., PDA, AV fistula, AR
Pulsus alternans
alternating strong and weak during sinus rhythm (e.g., severe myocardial failure)
Pulsus bigeminus
pulse strength alternates with arrhythmias e.g., ventricular bigeminy
Pulsus paradoxus
inspiratory fall in SAP exceeding 10 mmHg (e.g., pericardial dz, pericardial effusion & tamponade)
