PDL Flashcards
what is the PDL?
a CT
what does the PDL contain?
cells, EC matrix, fibres, nerves, b.v
what does the matrix contain?
hyaluronate glycosaminoglycans, proteoglycans, glycoproteins
what is the function of the matrix?
behaves as a viscous elastic gel
what cells are in the PDL?
fibroblasts, cementoblasts, osteoclasts, cementoclasts, epithelial cells(debris of malassez) defence cells
what nerves are in the PDL and what do they do?
sensory- mechanoreceptors and nociceptors, autonomic- b.v control, vasoconstriction
what do the fibres in the true PDL do?
connect tooth to bone at/apical to alveolar crest
where are the fibres in the gingival ligament found?
above alveolar crest
what does the PDL do?
attaches tooth to jaw
where does the PDL transmit biting forces?
alveolar bone
what fibres are in the alveolo-dental ligament?
alveolar crest, horizontal, oblique, apical, inter-radicular
what fibres are in the interdental ligament?
trans-septal fibres
