PD Flashcards
What does FITT stand for?
F= Frequency
I= Intensity
T= Time
T= Type
What is the intervention for Aerobic Exercise in Parkinson’s Patients?
Should implement moderate to high intensity aerobic training to improve oxygen consumption (VO2), reduce motor disease severity, and improve functional outcomes.
What is the dose for Aerobic Training in Parkinson’s Patients?
F= 3x/week
I= Moderate (60%-75% HRmax) to high (75%-85% HRmax)
T= 30-40 minutes
What are some types of Aerobic Training for Parkinson’s Patients?
Treadmill
Walking
Stationary cycling
Who should do Aerobic Training?
Most studies done with HY 1-2.
Consider cycling in HY 3-4 for safety due to balance issues.
What is the intervention for Resistance training for Parkinson’s Patients?
Should implement resistance training to reduce motor disease severity, and improve strength, power, non-motor symptoms, functional outcomes, and quality of life.
What is the dose for Resistance Training in Parkinson’s Patients?
F= 2 non consecutive days per week
I= Strength versus Power
T= 30-60 minutes per session
What should you know when dealing with intensity dose for Resistance Training for Parkinson’s Patients?
Progress as tolerated with good form.
Strength: Progress 80% of the repetition maximum (RM) to achieve strength gains
Beginner: 40%-60% of 1RM, or 1 set of 20-30 reps, progress to 2 sets of 15
Experienced: 80% of 1 RM, or 3 sets of 10-20 reps, working to muscle fatigue
Power: working at higher speeds to improve power
Beginner: 20%-30% of 1RM
Experienced: 40% of 1RM
What muscles should you do Resistance training on?
All major muscle groups, ESPECIALLY extensors (trunk, glutes).
What type of Resistance Training should you do for Parkinson’s Patients?
Weight machines
Body weight
Free weights
Who are we performing Resistance Training on?
Resistance Training is appropriate for people with mild-moderate PD (H&Y 1-3).
Consider supervised or adapted programs for those with balance deficits (moderate to severe PD (H&Y 3-4)
What is the intervention for Balance Training for Parkinson’s Patients?
Should implement balance training intervention programs to reduce postural control impairments , and improve balance and gait outcomes, mobility, balance confidence, and quality of life.
What is the dose for Balance Training for Parkinson’s Patients?
F= 2-3x/week
I= Highly variable bit aim for moderate to high intensity
T= 20-50 minutes
What are some types of Balance Training for Parkinson’s Patients?
Highly variable: Treadmill, Biofeedback, Sensors, and Visual feedback.
Who patients are appropriate for Balance Training?
Persons with idiopathic PD H&Y stage 1-4 who are ambulatory.
Balance training may be more effective when administered under close supervision of a physical therapist.
