what are the positive symptoms of schizophrenia?
things added on... hallucinations delusions confused thoughts disorganised speech trouble concentratng movement disorders
what are the negative symptoms of schizophrenia?
things taken away... lack of pleasure poverty of speech flattened affect social withdrawal struggles day to day loss of motivation no follow through
what are the cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia?
it affects memory, learning and understanding
what causes positive symptoms of schizophrenia?
the mesolimbic pathway being hyperactive
what causes negative symptoms of schizophrenia?
the mesocortiyal pathway being underactive
what’s the effect of too little or too much dopamine in the nigrostriatal pathway?
too little= Parkinsonism movement or dystonia
too much= hyperkinetic moevemnt
what are 1st generation antipsychotics?
they are typical antipsychotics that block D2 receptors. they are likely to cause extrapyramidal side effects (e.g. dystonia) and are less likely to have metabolic abnormalities
they are best for positive symptoms but can make negative symptoms worse
what are 2nd generation antipsychotics?
atypical antipsychotics which block D2 and 5HT2A receptors, they are less likely to cause extrapyramidal side effects but more likely to cause metabolic abnormalities e.g. weight gain
what is margin of error?
a statistic expressing the amount of random sampling error in the results of a survey. The larger the margin of error, the less confidence one should have that a poll result would reflect the result of a survey of the entire population.
