Angola
A country in Southern Africa that works towards democratic and socialist reform; south of Congo and today is called the Republic of Angola.
Apocrypha
Books or portions of books of the Old Testament that are included in the Roman Catholic Bible but are not generally found in Jewish or Protestant scriptures.
colonialism
Policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.
communism
A political system in which most or all property is owned by the state and is supposed to shared by all; a form of socialism that advocates government ownership and control of all individuals.
Congo
A country(and a river) in Southern Africa. It was renamed Zaire and today is called the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Congo is where most of the action in The Poisonwood Bible occurs.
coup
The act of overthrowing a sitting government, usually through military force.
dysentery
A disease often caused by contaminated water sources and often results in fatal cases of diarrhea.
edification
Moral instruction.
Eisenhower
Dwight D. Eisenhower was President of the United States from 1953-1960.
hemiplegia
Paralysis of only one side of the body.
Khrushchev
Nikita Khrushchev was the leader of communist Russia during the 1950’s and 60’s.
Kwilu
One of the provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo; takes its name from the Kwilu River.
Marx
Karl Marx was a 19th century philosopher credited with developing the philosophical and political system of communism.
missionaries
Persons sent to other countries or locales on a religious assignment.
okapi
A small deer-like animal found in the jungles of Africa and was believed to be a mythical creature because it was so rarely seen(a cross between a zebra and a giraffe).
