  1. In addition to the certificate requirement, there are certain limitations as the
    pregnancy nears its end. These are:
    Uncomplicated single pregnancies - accept up to end of the 36th week.
    Multiple pregnancies such as twins or triplets- accept up to end of the 32nd
    week.

Travel on urgent medical or compassionate reasons, after these limiting
periods, must be approved and cleared by Medical Services.

GENERAL HANDLING OF SICK PASSENGERS

A

a) The preservation of life and maintenance of the health of passengers whilst in
Ethiopian care is paramount.
b) Passengers who have sickness before check-in to any of Ethiopian flights must
always obtain safe-to-fly certificate from Ethiopian Company Doctor before they are
accepted and checked-in to Ethiopian flights.
c) If the passenger is originating from outstations and they bear safe-to-fly certificates
from another Doctor, the certificate has to be sent to Addis Ababa and endorsed by
Ethiopian Company Doctor before the passenger is allowed to board.
d) No station manager or Ground Handling company is allowed to Check-in and board
sick passengers without a medical certificate from Ethiopian Company Doctor.
Permanent physical disabilities shall not be considered as sickness, except that
such passengers may be required to be accompanied by assistants, only when
required.
f)Sick passengers with safe-to-fly medical certificates from Ethiopian Company
Doctor may not be accepted to board the flight or may be offloaded from the flight
if the physical condition of the sick passenger is substantially different or has
deteriorated from what is described in the medical certificate in the judgment of the
Pilot in Command (PIC) and the Team Leader Cabin Services.

PASSENGERS WHO BECOME SICK AFTER CHECK-IN BUT BEFORE BOARDING

A

a)If a passenger becomes sick after he/she checked-in on an Ethiopian flight but before
boarding the flight, the passenger has to be checked by a medical doctor at the Airport
before he/she is allowed to board the aircraft. The Ethiopian station manager or his
delegate shall;

PASSENGERS WHO BECOME SICK AFTER BOARDING THE AIRCRAFT BUT BEFORE
THE DOOR IS CLOSED

A

The Ethiopian station manager or his/her delegate shall make the sick passenger to be
seen and checked by a medical doctor either while the passenger is on-board or at the
Airport medical facility,
I. If the doctor determines he/she is safe to fly, the passenger shall be allowed to
continue the flight.
IL. If the doctor determines he/she is not safe to fly, or is doubtful about the
passenger conditions, or further examination of the sick passenger would delay the
flight considerably, the passenger shall be offloaded and the flight released.
b) A PIC has the right to refuse or accept an invalid or incapacitated passenger, if he believes the passenger:
Is likely to be at risk by the journey
I. Constitutes a flight safety hazard
IL. Might cause inconvenience or discomfort to others.

When making onload /offload decisions for passengers with medical needs, various support
options exist to enable the Captain to make an informed choice. If any doubt exists, pilots
should seek help or clarification from medical services or a doctor as follows:
I. Airport Medical Clinic
I. An Ethiopian doctor, contactable through the station manager.

PASSENGERS WHO BECOME SICK AFTER PUSHBACK AND DURING TAXIING

A

a) The Team Leader Cabin Services shall make a careful assessment of the general condition
of the sick passenger by talking to the passenger himself/herself, and makes best
judgment on the passengers ability to complete the flight.
b) If the Team Leader Cabin Services believes it would be unsafe for the life of the passenger
to continue with the flight, she/he shall inform the PIC and the flight may return to the
Gate. Then. the Ethiopian station manacer or his/her deleaate shall offload the sick

c) If the Team Leader Cabin Services believes the condition of the sick passenger is not serious, no further action is required, and the flight shall continue.

PASSENGERS SICKNESS IN FLIGHT

A

Team Leader Cabin Services shall;
Provide all the necessary first aids to the sick passenger, Cabin Crew may open the
Emergency Medical Kit without first seeking permission from the PIC. Team Leader
Cabin Services must make an entry in the Cabin/IFE Log and inform the Captain
when the seal on the Emergency Medical Kit has been broken, so that the Captain
may make an entry in the Report.
b)
Cabin Crew members shall administer first aid in cases of injury and/or
illness
encountered by passengers. Such cases shall be handled in a calm assuring manner
and will not be discussed with other passengers.
C
Under no circumstances shall an injection be given to passengers by a Cabin
crewmember. The only medication they may be given is that provided by Ethiopian,
either in the first aid kits or supplied along with the passenger amenities and stowed
in the galleys.
d)
All Ethiopian aircraft are equipped with the “Forerunner Heart Stream Defibrillator”,
for use by Cabin Crew as a supplementary treatment to cardio-pulmonary
resuscitation (CPR). The defibrillator is kept in the same stowage as the emergency
medical kit on each aircraft.
e)
Solicit medical assistance from passengers on board who may have a medical
profession (he/she must verify the medical qualification of any one volunteering to
assist).
f)
Inform the condition of the passenger to the PIC and update him/her regularly.
THE CONDITION OF THE PASSENGER DETERIORATES AND BECOMES CRITICAL
a) The Team Leader Cabin Services shall inform same to the PIC.
b) The PIC shall contact the IOCC Duty Manager through radios (VHF, HF, Satcom,

contact FOPs senior management for guidance.

establish contact with the Team Leader Cabin Services for advice on additional
medical support for the sick passenger. If the condition of the sick passenger
becomes stable or better, the flight shall continue to its destination.
d) If the sick passenger condition does not improve and becomes more critical, the
IOCC Duty Manager shall consult FOPs senior management for advice.

e) After assessing the situation, FOPs senior management (VP or Directors) shall
determine if the flight has to continue or make diversion to the nearest airport, and
advise same directly to the PIC or through IOCC Duty Manager.

IF THE PIC IS AUTHORIZED TO MAKE FLIGHT DIVERSION

A

a) He/she shall select the nearest suitable airport where the patient can be assisted
better and the Flight can be supported well.
I. PIC should not normally give any assurance that Ethiopian will accept any
responsibility for the costs of providing medical care. The only exception is
where passengers have suffered injury as a result of their flight with
Ethiopian (e.g. injury caused by clear air turbulence, pressurization failure,
etc.), where Ethiopian would accept full responsibility for the costs.
II. At locations where there is no Ethiopian representative the PIC should
consider the following options:
IlI. Ask a relative or friend of the passenger to stay with the sick passenger.
IV. Find a volunteer of the same nationality or with appropriate language skills to
remain with the sick passenger.

The check-in agent is responsible for advising to transit and destination stations the
presence of WCHC passengers on board the flight and location of wheelchairs and the
need to arrange special assistance.

CARRIAGE OF PASSENGERS ON A STRETCHER

How do infants travel

A

She/he has to be
seated with her/his guardian. However, if a passenger is traveling with two infants, only
one will be allowed to share the seat of the guardian and the other will have to have
another adjacent seat belt with an adult.

A

Up to three accompanied (involuntary) deportees may travel on any ET flight with prior
notification and approval by the Regional Director Sales & Services. However, the Pilot in
Command may refuse carriage to the deportee/s depending on the behavior and
aggressiveness of the passengers in question. At least two escorts for one involuntary
deportee shall be a requiryement

How do prisoners travel?

A

Prisoners are escorted at all times and remain under close physical supervision and
custody of escorts. Prisoners will usually be in some form of physical restraint.

A passenger requiring a stretcher shall ?

A

be accompanied by one able-bodied adult
attendant who will take care of the passenger throughout the journey. If the condition of
the patient demands and/or the authorized physician so requires, the passenger shall be
accompanied by nurse or physician.
c) The stretcher shall be installed and fitted by maintenance personnel on the right or left
rear end of the applicable class of service.
