Pattern Differentiation Flashcards
What is the character of the fever in the 3 yang stages of 6 Division Pattern
TaiYang - Fever and aversion to cold
YangMing - high fever but no aversion to cold (more severe)
ShaoYang - Alternative fever AND aversion to cold (most severe)
What is the channel pattern within the YangMing Stage
Big 4 symptoms: Big Fever Big Sweating Big Thirst Big pulse
Causes dryness and treated by clearing the heat.
What is the name of the main text discussing the Six Divisions Pattern
Shāng Hán Lùn/Treatise on Febrile Diseases caused by Cold by Zhāng Zhòng Jing
What are the six stages of the six division pattern and what is the normal sequence?
Tai Yang Yang Ming Shou Yang Tai Yin Shou Yin Jue Yin
What happens in the Tai Yang stage?
- This is the only exterior stage and the beginning stage
- The tai yang channel is attacked by wind cold pathogens
- Zheng Qi (upright Qi) resists Xie Qi (pathogenic qi) in the superficial area.
- Affects the Bladder
What are the symptoms of the Tai Yang stage?
- Aversion to cold
(caused by the obstruction of space between the skin and muscle by the external wind) - Headache and stiff neck
(wind contracts and stops movement) - Floating pulse
(reflects rush of Defensive qi to the surface of the body to fight wind) - Tongue is almost normal.
What are the two patterns reflected in the Tai Yang stage
- Channel patterns (more external)
Attack of Wind/Attack of Cold - Organ patterns (more internal)
Accumulation of Water/Accumulation of Blood
What are the differences between Cold attack and Wind attack in the Tai Yang pattern?
MAIN DIFFERENCE IS REGARDING SWEATING Cold attack (more pronounced) - No sweating - Pronounced aches - Severe Headache - Pronounced aversion to cold - Floating tight pulse Wind attack (milder) - Slight sweating - Slight aches - Mild Headache - Slight aversion to cold - Floating slow pulse
What are the differences between Accumulation of Water and Accumulation of Blood in the Tai Yang Pattern?
Accumulation of Water
- Heat in the Bladder at the Qi level
- Symptoms include urinary retention/no mental changes
Accumulation of Blood
- Heat in the Bladder at the Blood level
- Symptoms include Blood in the urine/mental changes
What happens in the Yang Ming Stage?
- Pathogen becomes interior
- Cold is transformed to Heat
- Can develop from Tai Yang stage
- Has two types of pattern (channel and organ)
- Affects the stomach and large intestines
What are the symptoms of the Yang Ming Stage?
EVERYTHING BECOMES MORE PRONOUNCED
- High fever
- Sweating
- Aversion to heat rather than aversion to cold
What are the two patterns reflected in the Yang Ming stage?
- Channel Pattern - BIG 4 symptoms - fever, sweating, thirst, pulse
Heat drying but Large intestine no stagnation - Organ Pattern - Stagnation, fullness, dry stools, excessive conditions.
Heat drying stagnates the Large Intestine
What are the differences between the channel and organ patterns in the Yang Ming stage?
Both have: - Fever, no shivers, feeling of heat, thirst, red tongue with yellow coating, rapid pulse. Specific to channel: - Profuse sweating - Overflowing pulse - Thin tongue coating Specific to organ: - constipation - Abdominal fullness-pain - Deep-full pulse - Thick tongue coating
What happens in the Shao Yang Stage?
- Bounces between interior and exterior
- Zheng Qi (upright Qi) and Xie Qi struggle in the area of half superficial and half internal (biao li) causing shao yang qi stagnation
What are the symptoms of the Shao Yang Stage?
- ALTERNATING AVERSION TO COLD AND FEVER
- Feelings of fullness in the hypochondriac area
- Bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat (GALLBLADDER)
- irritation, dizziness
- nausea or vomiting, no appetite (GALLBLADDER)
