Enforce Laws
arresting offenders helping citizens recover property and preventing criminal activity
Protects Constitutional Rights
protecting the right of every citizen in the city of Boston including harassment speech religion race color creed sexuality orientation physical disability just to name a few
Four Major Responsibilities (PAIR)
-participate in subsequent court procedures
-apprehend culprits
-identify criminal activity and locate criminals
-reduce the opportunity for the commission of some crimes through preventative patrol and other measures
Mission Statement
The mission of the Boston Police Department is dedicated to working in partnership with the community to fight crime, reduce fear and improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods
Our Mission is Community Policing
Direct Deterrent Patrol
Accomplished through crime analysis information gathered from the community to deter crime at a specific time in a specific area
Aggressive Patrol
the emphasis is on positive target oriented activities
Random patrol
makes his or her own patrol pattern and becomes unpredictable

Service Style
takes all calls seriously and usually doesn’t impose formal sanctions. Officer will intervene but does so in an informal manner
Watchmen
the ultimate intent is to maintain order rather than to regulate behavior and ignoring minor offenses and tolerating minor misbehavior is standard
Legalistic Style
strict adherence to the law is adherence officers is expected to exercise a little discretion and follow the letter of the law
Positive Community Relationships
-Officer must understand the patrol environment
-Identifying the community concerns can provide officers with insight into high-risk locations people and times that generate more risks
- reviewing data and analyzing trends enhances officer safety
-Identifying community influences that can provide insight into relationships power dynamics and personalities within the Patrol area
Specialized Patrol
plain cloths assignments for surveillance and supporting other department personnel with specific investigations and events
Basic Patrol
The most common type where officers are responsible for patroling a defined beat, zone, or district
Directed Patrol
focuses agency resources on places people and times were increased risk of crime has been identified
