Patriarchal society Flashcards
Lord Capulet
Does not want Juliet to marry Paris yet as of age 14 but for him to wait to more years
For a modern audience, this may be sensible but for an ELIZABETHAN AUDIENCE , his generosity would have been especially highlighted as many girls would have been married at younger than 14.
“woo her”, “get her heart”, “my will to her consent is but a part”
PRESENTED as considerate by Shakespeare in act 1 scene 2 and would like for Juliet to fall in love with Paris rather than just to marry her off to gain a good connection with Paris’ family
“younger than she are happy mothers made”/
“and too soon marred are those so early made”
Shakespeare CREATES a RHYMING COUPLET with Lord Capulet’s response to Paris- Shakespeare is presenting through Capulet’s opinion a minority/ PROTO- FEMINIST view on marriage at the time that he wants to HIGHLIGHT to his audience
“woo…
…her”
“get…
…her heart”
“my will….
…to her consent is but a part”
“younger than…”/
“and too…”
…she are happy mother’s made”
…soon marred are those so early made”
Romeo and Juliet share a sonnet as their first conversation?
By allowing them share a sonnet, Shakespeare PRESENTS a PROTO-FEMINIST approach to love and relationships where both the man and woman are equals in the relationship- SHOW AUDIENCE that women should be treated as equals and not just possessions in a relationship
