Patient Selection + Outcomes Flashcards
What pre-op factors should be considered when aiming to perform a successful surgery?
Patient Selection - Surgeons should evaluate a patients risk factors and factor any potentially increased risk of complications into their clinical decision making when considering a candidate for surgery
Patient Goals - What does the patient expect the surgery to result in? Is this realistic? E.g expecting to regain sensation in digits affected by a PDN following excision is not a possible outcome from that procedure, that area will never regain full sensation
Patient’s ability to deal with complications - Does the patient have the physical and mental ability to deal with potential severe complications?
Surgical Skill - Some surgeons experience fewer complications as they stick to routine lower risk procedures, some surgeons may experience more complications as they attempt to treat higher risk patients and perform higher risk procedures
Likelihood of a successful outcome
Post-Operative Care - Will the patient be able to attend their post op appointments and follow the protocol they are prescribed?
