-patient group direction
-written instruction that allows the supply/administration of a specified medicine by authorised health professional to a group of patients without needing a prescription for each individual

why are PGDs used

what must be included in a PGD
-name of business who owns direction
-start and end date of PGD
-the class of health professional who can supply/administer the medicine
-signature of the doctor/dentist etc.
-signature of an appropriate organisation e.g. NHS trust
-the specified condition to be treated
-description of patients excluded from treatment under direction
-description of when you should get more advice from a doctor and arrangement for referral

what is indemnity insurance
-Protects the healthcare professional if something goes wrong when providing care

-no schedule 1 drugs and most of schedule 2 or 3 either
-schedule 5 and 4 for some cases
-morphine, buprenorphine and midazolam can be used
-no methadone

what are the requirements of antimicrobials supplied under PGD
-must be regularly audited
-microbiologist must be involved in the PGDs
TIGHTLY CONTROLLED DUE TO ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE

These are new medicines or newly licensed indications under additional monitoring
-patient must be aware of the intensive surveillance of this medicine
