Step 1:
Take or verbalizes appropriate PPE precautions
Step 2: Scene Size-Up
Determines the scene/situation is safe
Step 3:
Determines the mechanism of injury/ nature of illness
Step 4:
Determines the number of patients
Step 5:
Requests additional EMS assistance if necessary
Step 6:
Considers stabilization of the spine
Step 7: Primary Survey/Resuscitation
Verbalizes general impression of the patient
Step 8:
Determines responsiveness/level of consciousness
Step 9:
Determines chief complaint/ apparent life-threats
Step 10: Airway
-Opens and assesses airway
-Inserts adjunct as indicated
Step 11: Breathing
-Assess Breathing
-Assures adequate ventilation
-Initiates appropriate oxygen therapy
-Manages any injury which may compromise breathing/ventilation
Step 12: Circulation
-Check Pulse
-Assess Skin [either skin color, temperature, or condition]
-Assesses for and controls major bleeding if present
-Initiates shock management [positions patient properly, conserves body heat]
Step 13:
Identifies patient priority and makes treatment/transport decision (based upon calculated GCS)
Step 14: History Taking
Obtains baseline vital signs [must include BP, P, and R]
Step 15:
Attempts to obtain SAMPLE history
Step 16 Secondary Assessment: Head
-Inspects and palpates scalp and ears
-Assesses eyes
-Inspects mouth, nose, and assessed facial area
Step 17: Neck
-Check position of trachea
-Checks jugular veins
-Palpates cervical spine
Step 18: Chest
-Inspects chest
-Palpates chest
-Auscultates chest
Step 19: Abdomen/Pelvis
-Inspects and palpates abdomen
- Assesses Pelvis
-Verbalizes assessment of genitalia/perineum as needed
Step 20: Lower Extremities
-Inspects, palpates, and assesses motor, sensory, and distal circulatory functions
Step 21: Upper Extremities
- Inspects, palpates, and assesses motor, sensory, and distal circulatory functions
Step 22: Posterior Thorax, Lumbar, and Buttocks
-Inspects and palpates posterior thorax
-Inspects and palpates lumbar and buttocks areas
Step 23:
Manages secondary injuries and wounds appropriately
Step 24: Reassessment
Demonstrate how and when to reassess the patient
