Patient Assessment Flashcards
What is angles classification?
Based on first permanent molar relationship
Class 1 = mesiobuccal cusp of upper 6 occludes in the buccal groove of the lower 6
Class 2 = mesiobuccal cusp of upper 6 occludes anterior to the buccal groove of lower 6
Class 3 = mesiobuccal cusp of upper 6 occludes posterior to the buccal groove of lower 6
What is the BSI definition of class 1
The lower incisor edges occlude with or lie immediately below the cingulum palateau of the upper incisor
What is the BSI definition of class 2 div 1
The lower incisor edges lie posterior to the cingulum plateau of the upper incisors
There is increased OJ and the upper incisors are proclined or of average inclination
What is the BSI definition for class 2 div 2
The lower incisor edges occlude posterior to the cingulum plateau of the upper incisors
The overjet is minimal or may be increased
The upper incisors are retroclined
What is the BSI definition for class 3
The lower incisor edges occlude anterior to the cingulum plateau of the upper incisors
The overjet is reduced or reversed
What is IOTN
Index of orthodontic treatment need
Developed to help identify the malocclusions which most benefit from ortho treatment
What are the two components of IOTN
Dental health component
Aesthetic component
Which acronym is used to help identify the IOTN
MOCDO
Missing teeth
Overjet
Cross bite
Displacement of contact points
Overbite
What can be used in addition to IOTN?
PAR
Peer assessment rating
Which IOTN scores indicate treatment need?
IOTN 4 and 5 indicate treatment need
IOTN 3 is borderline
When should an initial ortho assessment be carried out, and what should be examined?
At 7-8 years - assess the form, position and presence of permanent incisors
The prognosis of FPM (from 8 years)
Palpation of maxillary canines from age 10 years.
What are the AP skeletal pattern classes?
Class 1 = mandible lies 2-3mm behind maxilla
Class 2 = mandible is retruded in relation to maxilla
Class 3 = mandible is protruded in relation to maxilla
How is vertical skeletal pattern assessed?
Assessment of LAFH - upper and lower anterior face height should be equal (upper= glabella to subnasale, lower= subnasale to menton).
Assessment of Frankfort mandibular plane angle (FMPA) - angle between the inferior border of the mandible and the Frankfort plane (alae of nose to external auditory meatus). These two planes should meet at the back of the skull.
How is transverse skeletal pattern measured?
Facial asymmetry (look at patient from above or in front).
