Pathophys Flashcards
Asthma
A common inflammatory disease if the airways characterised by acute swelling, mucus plugging and bronchoconstriction.
Symptoms are completely reversible and in between attacks patients are generally symptom free
TBI
Traumatic brain injury
2 types
Primary brain injury ( injuries causing the brain injury )
Secondary ( injuries that continue after the initial injury)
COPD ( chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
A chronic inflammatory and destructive disease within the lungs.
Unlike asthma, the symptoms of COPD aren’t completely reversible.
- Chronic Bronchitis
- Emphysema
Anaphylaxis
A rapid onset multi organ, generalised hypersensitivity occurring after being exposed to a allergen ( venom/bee sting, foods or medications).
This results in a exaggerated release of histamines and inflammation chemicals, resulting in localised or systemic reaction.
CPO (cariogenic pulmonary oedema)
An accumulation of fluid within the lungs
This is due to the heart being unable to sufficiently pump, resulting in a back up of fluid in lungs and fluid filling the alveoli
