Pathology of the Skeletal System Flashcards
loss or absence of mobility in a joint due to disease, injury or surgery
Ankylosis
frozen shoulder, painful ankylosis of the shoulder
Adhesive Capsulitis
Stiffness of the joint
Arthrosclerosis
inflammation of the bursa
Bursitis
abnormal softening of cartilage
Chondromalacia
inflammatory condition of one or more joints
Arthritis
known as wear and tear arthritis, associated w/ aging
Osteoarthritis
- Type of inflammatory arthritis characterized by deposits of urate crystals in the joints, often the big toe.
- High levels of uric acid in the blood caused by meds, alcohol, diet, and/or disease
Gout
- Chronic autoimmune disorder in which the joints are attacked
- AS RA progressively attack synovial membranes, they become inflamed and thicken so the joints are swollen and painful
Rheumatoid arthritis
A slipped or ruptured disk, the breaking apart of an intervertebral disk resulting in a bulge that can put pressure on the spinal nerve
Herniated Disk
low back pain, general term for pain in the lumbar spine
Lumbago
what are the diseases ion the curvature of the spine
- Kyphosis
- Lordosis
- Scoliosis
abnormal increase in outward curvature in the thoracic spine
Kyphosis
abnormal increase in forward curve of the lumbar spine
Lordosis
abnormal sideways curve of the spine
Scoliosis
loss of bone density and increase in bone porosity
Osteoporosis
Thinner than average bone density
Osteopenia
What are the fractures of bone? (4)
- Open fracture
- Comminuted fracture
- Stress fracture
- Transverse fracture
Aka compound fracture, broken bone breaks through the skin
Open fracture
bone splintered or crushed
Comminuted fracture
overuse injury, small crack in bone that develops from chronic excessive impact
Stress fracture
occurs straight across, perpendicular to the shaft of the bone
Transverse fracture
radiography, help visualize bone fractures and abnormalities of other hard-tissues
X-ray
visual exam of the internal structure of a joint
Arthroscopy
used to image soft tissue such as the interior of joints
Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI)
