Pathology of inflammation Flashcards
What is cellulitis?
Potentially serious infection of the deeper layers of the skin (epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous fat)
What is psoriasis?
Chronic inflammatory skin condition with epithelial hyperplasia
What is sarcoidosis?
A chronic inflammatory skin condition where inflamed cells clump together to make small lumps called granulomas
What is acute inflammation?
Initial defensive tissue response to an insult such as infection. It consists of infiltration by neutrophils, increased vascular leafiness and increase amount of cytokines.
In acute viral illness we usually see lymphocytes rather than neutrophils.
What is non-specific chronic inflammation?
Infiltration of tissues by lymphocytes, plasma cells and histiocytes
What is granulomatous chronic inflammation?
Special type of inflammation where granulomas are seen histologically
What are granulomas ?
Round collections of macrophages (histiocytes) with occasional multinucleated cells (giant cells)
List 3 examples of when a granulomatous chronic inflammation is detected.
Sarcoid
TB
Reaction to foreign body material
What is caseous necrosis?^
A type of necrosis seen in granulomas due to TB
What is the naked eye appearance of caseous necrosis?
Cheesy and microscopic appearance is dirty / basophilic / dark
When is the Ziel-Neelson stain positive?
When TB is detected
What is tuberculosis?
A bacterial infection spread through inhaling tiny droplets from coughs or sneezing if infected patients.
It mainly affects the lungs but can affect other organs also.
If inflammation is due to a trigger such as a drug reaction, insect bite reaction, atopic eczema or eosinophilia asthma, what type of inflammation is present ?
Eosinophil rich inflammation
What is an abscess?
Accusation of pus within tissue
What is empyema?
Accumulation of us in a cavity like the pleural cavity
