Pathology of Epithelia Flashcards
Dysplasia
Changes in size, shape, or organization of cells
Can be precancerous
Hyperplasia
Increased number of cells
Hypertrophy
Increased size of cells
Hypoplasia
Decreased number of cells
Hypotrophy (atrophy)
Decreased size of cells
Pelomorphism
Many different sizes and shapes of cells
Can affect entire cells and their nuclei
Characteristic of malignancy
Anaplasia
De-differentiation of a given cell type
Determines degree of malignancy (less differentiated cells = more malignant neoplasm)
Metaplasia
A change from one cell type to another as a result of physical or chemical stress
Papilloma
Benign tumor arising from a surface epithelium
Adenoma
Benign tumor arising from a glandular epithelium
Carcinoma
Epithelial cancer
Adenocarcinoma
Carcinoma arising from glandular tissue
