Pathology: Inflammation Flashcards
What is the cause of inflammation?
Injury
What are causes of cellular injury?
- Infection
- Trauma
- Foreign bodies
- Immune reaction
- Necrosis
What is the response to cellular injury?
- Vascular Changes
- Cellular Changes
- Chemical Mediators - pain
- Morphologic Patterns
What are vascular changes caused by injury?
- Vasodilation
* Slows blood flow and allows for margination
What are vascular changes mediated by?
- Histamine
* Nitric oxide
What clinical signs are caused by vasodilation?
- Calor - increased heat
* Rubor - erythema
What are cellular changes in response to injury?
- White cell margination
- Rolling
- Adhesion
- Migration
Describe the normal flow of blood
- Blood flows centrally within a vessel
What are changes to blood flow caused by vasodilation?
- Rate of flow slows
- Cells are able to move peripherally (especially larger white cells)
- Known as margination
What is white cell margination?
- WBCs move to periphery of blood vessel due to slow blood flow
How do WBCs adhere to blood vessel walls if they are usually slippy?
In inflammation, the vessels express various proteins on lumen surface that have a matching protein on white cell surface
