Pathology Flashcards
What is inflammation?
a reaction to injury or infection involving immune cells such as macrophages and neutrophils
When is inflammation good?
when fighting off infection or in response to injury
What immune cells are usually involved in acute inflammation?
neutrophil polymorphs
What immune cells are usually involved in chronic inflammation?
macrophages and lymphocytes
Which inflammatory cells have phagocytic properties
macrophages
Which inflammatory cells have immunological memory
lymphocytes
How do endothelial cells aid inflammation?
they become sticky, porous and form new capillaries
What do fibroblasts form?
collagen
Is appendicitis an example of acute or chronic inflammation?
acute inflammation
Is TB an example of acute or chronic inflammation?
chronic
What is the Mantoux test?
an intradermal injection of 0.1ml PPD tuberculin
In response to the Mantoux test, what induration diameter indicates a positive TB result in healthy individuals?
> 10mm indicates TB
In response to the Mantoux test, what induration diameter indicates a positive TB result in immunosuppressed individuals?
> 5mm indicates TB
What is a granuloma?
an aggregation of macrophages and other immune cells in response to inflammation and occur when the immune system attempts but fails to eliminate foreign substance
How does ice reduce inflammation?
causes vasoconstriction, stopping inflammatory cells from reaching the site of inflammation
