Pathology Flashcards
Diagnosis: cerebral infarct
Location: cerebrum
Section of brain showing focal area of softened liquefied dead necrotic tissue
The necrotic tissue is removed leaving cystic space
Diagnosis: healed cerebral infarct
Location: cerebrum
Cerebral hemisphere showing a cystic space surrounded by and filled with glial tissue
Diagnosis: intracerebral hemorrhage
Location: basal ganglia
A coronal section in the brain showing a localised area of large dark red brown hematoma in the cerebral hemisphere
Note compression effects on the ventricle
Smaller hemorrhagic foci are also seen
Diagnosis: intraventricular hemorrhage
Location: lateral and third ventricles
A coronal section in the brain showing a collection of blood in the subependymal region and within the lateral and third ventricles in a premature newborn
The brain parenchyma is compressed
Diagnosis: subarachnoid hemorrhage
Location: subarachnoid space
A whole brain showing blood collection in the subarachnoid space, covering the inferior surface of the brain
Diagnosis: subdural hematoma
Location: subdural space
Collection of freshly clotted blood over the lateral aspects of the cerebral hemispheres without extension into the depths of sulci
Diagnosis: cerebral oedema
Location: cerebrum
The surface of brain with cerebral oedema shows:
-Widened gyri
-narrow sulci
-flattened surface
Diagnosis: purunlent meningitis
Location/organ: meninges
A photograph showing both cerebral hemispheres of the brain
The subarachnoid space shows a layer of yellowish opaque purulent exudate and congested blood vessels
Diagnosis: brain abscess
Location: cerebrum
A coronal section in the brain shows a cavity in the left cerebral hemisphere having a thick wall and lined by yellowish purulent exudate
The lateral ventricle is compressed due to mass effect
Diagnosis: pilocystic astrocytoma
Location: cerebellum
A circumscribed cystic lesion with a mural solid nodule
Filled with mucoid material
Diagnosis: glioblastoma
Location: cerebrum
An ill-defined greyish white tissue
Showing a variegated cut section with areas of hemorrhage and necrosis
Diagnosis: meningioma
Location: meninges
A coronal section of the brain showing a dural-based exophytic lesion
Greyish white in colour and firm in consistency
The tumour is compressing but not invading the brain parenchyma
Diagnosis: metastatic deposits
Location: cerebrum
Multiple nodules of different sizes
Brown and friable with areas of hemorrhage and necrosis
