amenorrhea
absence of menses; the first sign of pregnancy
abortion
removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus
miscarriage/spontaneous abortion
expulsion of an embryo or fetus from the uterus
abruptio placenta
separation of the placental lining from the uterus
preeclampsia
hypertension, proteinuria; substance in placenta causing dysfunction in maternal blood vessels
eclampsia
pre-eclampsia that has progressed to convulsions and shock
ectopic pregnancy
pregnancy occurring outside the uterus; commonly in the uterine tubes
placenta previa
separation of placenta with hemorrhage caused by placenta being implanted just over or near the top of cervix
breech presentation
birth position in which the buttocks, feet, or knees emerge first
dystocia
abnormal or difficult childbirth or labor
respiratory distress syndrome
complication of premature birth; lungs have not yet matured
spina bifida
incomplete closure of neural tube, leads to incomplete development of the spine; part of spine protrudes outside the back
transient tachypnea of the newborn
periods of very rapid breathing, usually because of retained lung fluid; common in babies delivered by C-section w/o labor
