What is vestibular schwannoma/acoustic neuroma

A

Slow growing tumors that affects auditory nerve. Usually vestibular schwannoma a, meaning arise from Schwann cells of vest portion of VIIIth nerve. Symptoms hearing loss tinnitus facial numbness dizziness ear pain. Hearing loss at HF due to layout of VIII nerve. No test- rule out other causes.

Acoustic neuroma

A

Commonly in IAM. Grow into cerebellopontine angle. Can affect involuntary body function by putting pressure on pons of brainstem. Treat- remove surgically or w radiation. If small, hearing preserved.

A

Progressive demyelination disease that creates areas of demyelination and gills is called plaques. Causes dizziness vertigo hearing loss. Abnormal responses of electro physiological tests from audiologist a. Treat with corticosteroids during attacks- meds to slow process.

What is vestibular neuritis? Cause? treatment?

A

Second most common cause of vertigo. Viral infections, allergies. Intense attack with nausea, vomiting for 2 to 3 days with no auditory changes except ultra high f. Treat with anti nausea, anti inflammatory, antiviral meds. Recovery in 1-3mos.
