CVA
Damage to the blood vessels of the cerebrum, leading to loss of blood supply to brain tissue
Encephalitis
Inflammation of the brain or spinal cord
Epilepsy
Abnormal electricity activity of the brain results in seizures: in a grand mal seizure there is a loss of consciousness, involuntary muscular contractions and incontinence
In petit mal seizure there is a sudden temporary loss of consciousness for a few seconds
Hydrocephalus
An abnormal increase of CSF in the brain causing the head circumference to increase. If untreated may cause mental retardation
Meningitis
Inflammation of the meninges (membranes around the brain and spinal cord)
Spina bifida
A congenital defect where one or more of the vertebrae don’t close normally and some of the spinal nerves and meninges are outside the spine
Alzheimer’s disease
Brain condition marked by deterioration of mental capacity
