Pathologic types Flashcards
Categories
serous fibrinous purulent hemorrhagic constrictive
serous pericarditis
pericardium has smooth surface
scant neutrophils, lymphocytes, macrophages
usually associated w/ 50-200mL effusion of thin serous (little protein) fluid
Fibrinous pericarditis
surface is dry, roughened, shaggy
more neutrophils, lymphocytes, macrophages
“bread and butter” appearance
(fibrin exudate on pericardial surface)
Fibrinous pericarditis if associated w/ serous pleural effusion…
serofibrinous
purulent pericarditis
red granular surface
coated w/ pus
lots of surface neutrophils
up to 500mL of purulent exudate in pericardium
Hemorrhagic pericarditis
serous, fibrinous, or purulent pericarditis PLUS hemorrhage, +/- effusion or exudate with blood added
Constrictive pericarditis
