Pathogens and treatments Flashcards
Perichondritis causes and treatment
Herpes zoster - vesicles are usually confined to the concha
Bacterial cellulitis - Streptococcus sp. or Staphylcoccus aureus.
IV antibiotics e.g. ciprofloxacin
Acute Otitis Media pathogens and treatment
Strep pneumoniae, H influezae, M catarrhalis
RSV adenovirus rotavirus
All from URTI
Analgesia.
Most don’t need abx. Give abx if <6/12 old, at risk of infectious complications, symptoms >4 days, systemically unwell, (consider if bilateral, perf/discharge, <2 yo). Eg PO amoxicillin. Drops work well if discharge
Rhinitis most common pathogens
Rhinoviruses, Coronaviruses, and influenza viruses
Rhinosinositis causes and treatments
Viral: Rhinoviruses, Coronaviruses, and influenza viruses
Bacterial: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae
Amox for bacterial
Tonsilitis pathogens and treatment
Viral: EBV RSV adenovirus
Bacterial: strep pyogen, strep pneumon, haemophilis
Usually viral. If there is exudate, fever, tender LNs and no cough more likely bacterial
Penicillin dont give amox or ampicillin b/c could be glandular fever and will give a rash if those are perscribed
Supraglotitis pathogen and treatment
Streptococcus pneumoniae
Amox
Periorbital cellulitis/abcess pathgoens and treatment
Staph and sometime anaerobes
Intravenous Cefuroxime and Metronidazole
URTI: Rhinositis, sinositis, pharyngitis, laryngitis pathogens and treatment
Bacteria: Staphylcoccus aureus., strep pneumon
Viral: Rhinoviruses, Coronaviruses, and influenza viruses
Mastioditis originating infection, pathogens and treatment
Chronic OM
Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae
IV antibiotics (broad spectrum) May require middle ear drainage (myringotomy) or mastiodectomy
Labrinthitis treatment
Usually viral
Benzos to reduce brain activity
Antiemetic to help nausea
Corticosteriod to reduce inflammation
Antibiotics if worried about bacteria infection
Vestibular neuronitis pathogens and treatment
Usually viral
Self resolving
Benzos
Antiemetics
Antibiotics
Retropharyngeal abscess originating infections and treatment
tonsils, throat, sinuses, adenoids, or nose
IV ceftriaxone or clindamycin (cos it real bad want to cover everything)
Fluids
Surgical drainage intubation and O2 if its bad
Quinsy aka peritonsular abscess pathopneumonic, what is it a complication of pathogen and treatment
Hot potato voice
glandular fever and tonsilitis
streptococcus
Steriods, drainage and amox depending on how bad
Glandular fever tests, cause and treatment
Monospot and paulbunnel test
EBV
Analgesics and support. No contact sport or alcohol
URTI: Rhinositis, sinositis, pharyngitis, laryngitis pathogens and treatment
Bacterial Strep pneumoniae, H influezae, M catarrhalis
Viral: RSV adenovirus rotavirus
