1
Q

Q

Acute Otitis Media pathogens and treatment

A

Strep pneumoniae, H influezae, M catarrhalis
RSV adenovirus rotavirus

All from URTI

Analgesia.
Most don’t need abx. Give abx if <6/12 old, at risk of infectious complications, symptoms >4 days, systemically unwell, (consider if bilateral, perf/discharge, <2 yo). Eg PO amoxicillin. Drops work well if discharge

A

Viral: EBV RSV adenovirus
Bacterial: strep pyogen, strep pneumon, haemophilis
Usually viral. If there is exudate, fever, tender LNs and no cough more likely bacterial

Penicillin dont give amox or ampicillin b/c could be glandular fever and will give a rash if those are perscribed
