Pathogens and communicable disease Flashcards
What is a disease?
A condition that impairs the normal functioning of an organism- in both plants and animals
What is a pathogen?
An organism that causes disease. These include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protoctista
How are communicable diseases most commonly spread in animals?
From one species to another (intraspecific) but can also be spread between species (Inter specific)
What are vectors?
Something that can carry pathogens from one organism to another. These include water and insects
What is the first type of pathogen, bacteria?
-prokaryotes= no membrane bound organelles or nucleus
-only pathogenic bacteria will cause communicable disease
What are the two ways in which bacteria can be classified?
- By their basic shape
- By being gram positive or gram negative to gram staining = the 2 different types of cell wall determine if an antibiotic is needed to kill the bacteria.
Why is there a debate as to if viruses are alive or not?
-don’t fulfil the MRS GREN criteria, don’t have own metabolism, but do have genetic material which mutates causing new strains of virus to evolve
What is the basic structure of a virus?
-Some genetic material (Either DNA or RNA) surrounded by a protein coat.
-around 50 times smaller then bacteria
Why are viruses considered the ultimate parasites?
-they invade living cells and “hijack” the protein synthesis capability of the host cell, by inserting viral DNA into the genome , only allowing transcription and translation of viral genes
What are retroviruses?
-viruses which have RNA as their genetic material= have to transcribe their RNA into DNA because it can’t be inserted into the DNA genome of the host cell . This requires the enzyme called reverse transcriptase
What type of cells can viruses use as their host cell?
-all types of eukaryotes
-viruses called bacteriophages can also use prokaryotes
What is the difference between protoctista and protista?
-protoctista= includes multicellular organisms
-protista= unicellular
What are protoctista?
Group of eukaryotic organisms with a wide variety of feeding methods
-most are not pathogenic but those that are can cause communicable disease in both animals a and plants
What is meant by pathogenic protoctista being parasitic?
-use the people or animals they infect as their host organism
What are fungi?
-eukaryotic organisms, that are often multicellular, but if pathogenic are single celled
