pathogens Flashcards
what is a protist disease and what does it do ?
Malaria causes by protiststakes place in mosquitos
Pick up malaria when they feed off of infected animals
Infect other animals by inserting the protists into the animals blood vessels
Cause repeated episodes of fever
Can be reduced by stopping the breeding of mosquitoes
what is a fungal disease and what does it do ?
Rose black spots causes black or purple spots on the leaves of rose plants
Leaves turn yellow and drop off
= less photosynthesis plants don’t grow
Gardeners can treat using fungicides
what is tmv and what does it do ?
Virus that affects species of plants .eg. tomatoes
Causes mosaic patterns on the leaf of plants causing it to become discoloured
Meaning has no chlorophyll for photosynthesis
what is HIV and how is it spread
Virus spread by sexual contact or by exchanging bodily fluid .eg. Blood
Cause flew like symptoms
Can be controlled by antiretroviral drugs These stop the virus from replicating in the body
Attacks immune cells

what are measles and how are they spread
Viral disease
Spread by droplets of infected sneeze or cough.
Develop red skin rash fever
If serious can lead to pneumonia or inflammation of the brain
Get vaccinated when young
three ways pathogens can be spread
By water : drinking water or dirty bathing water
By air: some airborn pathogens droplets produced when you cough
By direct contact: by touching contaminated surfaces including the skin
what are fungi
Come in different shapes and sizes
Have a body made up of hyphae (thread like structure)
Can produce spores which can be spread to plants and animals
Grow and penetrate human skin and surface of plants
what is a protist
Single celled eukaryotes
Some protists live on or in other organisms and can cause damage
Often transferred by a vector
what are viruses
Not cells like bacteria
But can produce rapidly
Can live inside cells and replicate themselves the cells then usually burst releases new viruses onto the body
what is bacteria
type of microorganisms that rapidly produce in the body and can make you feel ill by producing toxins that damage cells and tissue
what are pathogens
Microorganisms that enter the body and cause disease
