Pathogens Flashcards
what is a pathogen?
a disease causing microorganism
what are the 4 types of pathogen?
virus, bacteria, fungi, protidts
A disease caused by a virus
HIV potentially leading to AIDS, ebola, measles
A plant disease caused by a virus
tobacco mosaic virus
a disease caused by a bacteria
salmonella, strep throat, Q fever
a plant disease caused by a bacteria
agrobacterium
a disease caused by a fungi
athletes foot, ringworm, yeast infections
a plant disease caused by a fungi
rose black spot
a disease caused by a protist
maleria
a plant disease caused by a protist
downy mildew
what is a pathogen life cycle?
infect host, reproduce (/replicate if virus), spread from their host, infect other organisms
why do pathogens have structural adaptations?
make them successful at completing their life cycles, which enable them to cause further disease
what are diseases caused by pathogens called?
communicable diseases
what is a communicable disease?
a disease that can be transferred from one person to another
types of disease that cannot be caught
inherited genetic disorders (cystic fibrosis), deficiency diseases (scurvy), diseases like cancer that develop as a result of exposure to carcinogens or develop naturally as cell division occurs incorrectly.
