Pathogenic Disease Flashcards
Investigating the response of the body to changes as a result of the presence of microorganisms.
What is a pathogen?
Any type of bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi.
Infectious
Can be transmitted through the environment.
Contageous
Can be transmitted between organisms.
What is bacteria? (7 things)
Microscopic, unicellular(prokaryotic), no membrane bound organelles, DNA without a nuclear membrane, Often contains a cell wall and cell membrane, Often produces toxins which cause symptoms, reproduce by simple fission.
Examples of bacteria
Spherical, rod-like, spiral
Examples of bacterial diseases
Whooping cough, tetanus, diphtheria, pneumococcal, meningococcal, chlamydia
What is a virus?
Microscopic (one hundredth of the size of bacteria), contains DNA or RNA surrounded by protein coat, invade host cells and use them to replicate.
Examples of viral diseases
Cold (Rhinovirus)
Influenza (Flu)
Measles
Chicken Pox
Cold Sore (HSV)
