Patho quiz SCI Flashcards
What are impairments in Brown Sequard Syndrome
Ipislateral loss of proprioception and spastic weakness
Contralateral loss of pain and temperature
Central Cord Syndrome impairments?
Upper extremity more involved than lower extremity. Pain and temperature impaired.
Anterior Cord Syndrome
Pain and temperature loss. Motor paralysis below level of lesion
Posterior column syndrome
Vibration and position impairments. Sensory ataxia
What is Spinal shock
Loss of sensation and motor paralysis with initial loss of reflexes which come back following SCI usually complete
What is Neurogenic Shock?
Disruption in autonomic pathways in spinal cord due to severe trauma resulting in hypotension from blood pooling in extremities.
Treatment for neurogenic shock (4 things)
- Fluid replacement
- Dopamine
- Antidiuertic Hormone
- Vasopressors
What is Autonomic Dysreflexia?
8 things
Overstimulation of autonomic system. Characterized by 1. paroxysmal hypotension 2. throbbing headaches 3. profuse sweating 4. nasal stuffiness 5. flushing of skin 6. slow heart rate 7. Cognitive impairments 8 Anxiety
At least 3 causes of AD
- Skin disorders
- Irritants
- Bowel irritants and over distention
How to treat AD
Check Blood pressure
Identify and remove stimulius
What are causes of Orthostatic hypotension?
3 causes
Fall in BP due to change in body position
- Dehydration
- Medications
How to treat orthostatic hypertension (Four things)
- Hydration
- Avoid anticholinergics and vasodilators
- Elastic abd binders and leg wraps
- Slow motion to upright position.
How does one designate lesion level?
Indicate most distal uninvolved nerve segment with normal function along with skeletal level
What is an ASIA C classification?
Motor function intact below neurological level and more than half of key muscles below level of lesion have muscle grade less than 3
POC for acute SCI?
- Immboilization
- Medical stabilization
- Spinal alignment
- Spine stabilization
- Steroids
