Patho Exam 1 Flashcards
Innate immunity
Natural
Active aquired immunity
Been exposed before
Passive acquired immunity
Mother to baby
What organ/cells provide initial immune response against bacteria or viruses?
Skin, phagocytes (neutrophils + monocytes)
Humoral immunity
antibodies (b-lymphocytes); 1st line of defense after the skin; rapid response; generalized; attack acute bacterial infections
Cell-mediated immunity
t-lymphocytes; recognize specific organisms then hunt them down to kill them; regulatory t-cells turn off immune system to prevent over-reacting (auto immune disorders)
B-lymphocytes
produced in bone marrow (Humoral)
T-lymphocytes
mature in thymus (Cell-mediated)
Benefits of exercise on immunity
enhanced with moderate exercise; prevents immunologic effects of stress
Detrimental effects of exercise on immunity
strenuous exercise can impair immune system (over exercising)
What is iatrogenic immunodeficiency? What factors contribute to it?
Immune compromise from a medical procedure; cytotoxic drugs (not selective), corticosteroids, radiation, splenectomy
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Happens after mono or another infection; first feels like flu but acute symptoms go away and fatigue stays; minimal activity wipes them out; cyclical but progressive; no way to definitively diagnose; treatment is symptom relief
Fibromyalgia
chronic muscle pain; wide-spread tender spots (18, where large muscles attach); treatment is holistic + antipsychotics, sleeping meds; cyclical pain; be careful with exercise
Type 1 Hypersensitivity Disorder
immediate response to pathogen; anaphylactic shock
Type 2 Hypersensitivity Disorder
body’s tissue is recognized as foreign; cytotoxic reaction
