What is a Strand Test? (Porosity)
To test the level of porosity and elasticity within a hair strand.
In the Sink or Swim Test what does it mean if your Hair Strand Floats?
If your hair strand floats it means your hair is low porosity. Winner!!!
In the Sink or Swim Test what does it mean if your Hair Strand Sinks Slowly or Settles in the Middle?
It is medium/normal porosity. Not too bad!
In the Sink or Swim Test what does it mean if your Hair Strand Sinks to the Bottom?
It is considered highly porous :(
This means chemical services and hot tools should be reconsidered.
When should you perform a Preliminary Patch test and Strand test?
You should perform a Preliminary Patch test and Strand test before a chemical service.
What is the purpose of a Patch Test?
It will determine any irritation a client may experience during a service. Can a small amount behind their ear, on their scalp.
What is the purpose of a Strand Test?
Will determine the processing time and the condition after lightening. As well as what lightener to use.

The scientific study of hair, its diseases, and its care.
Define Hair
Slender, threadlike protein strand that is an appendage of the scalp and body.
What is the Chemical Composition of the Hair?
Hair is composed of a protein called keratin.
What is the Hair Pigment?
It is Located in the cortex, called melanin.
What are the 2 Types of Melanin?
Eumelanin: responsible for dark shades.
Pheomelanin: responsible for red, yellow, and blonde.
What are Common Conditions of the Scalp?
Dry hair and scalp: caused by inactive sebaceous glands, excessive shampooing, and a dry climate.
Oily hair and scalp: Caused by overactive sebaceous glands or improper shampooing, greasy buildup on hair and scalp treated with medicated shampoo and scalp massage.
