Gram Negative Bacilli Non-motile Facultative Anaerobes Fermentative Grows on blood and chocolate NO GROWTH on MacConkey (unique as it usually selects for gram neg rod) Oxidase Positive Catalase Positive Penicillin Susceptible
Where is Pasteurella normally found?
Normal resp and GI flora of cats and dogs
How does pasteurella infeciton occur?
Cat and Dog bits and scratches
Inhalation
What are the species of pasteurella?
P.Multocida(cat)
P.Canis (dog)
What happens in human infections of pasteurella via animal bite?
Wound infections/cellulitis following cat bite
Pain, swelling, serosanguinous drainage at wound site
Septic Arthritis and Osteomyelitis for deep puncture wounds
Compromised patients may get serious infections requiring debridement
How is Pasteurella diagnosed
Culture the lesion site and collect blood for culture
What drug is used to treat pasteurella?
Penicillin(unusual for gram neg organism)
Is Pasteurella catalase neg or pos?
Positive
Is Pasteurella oxidase neg or pos?
Positive
What kind of agar does pasteurella grow on?
Blood
Chocolate
