- Taliban established in Afghanistan. Al-Qaeda issued Declaration of War 23/2/98. US embassies bombed in Kenya and Tanzania Aug 98. 200 dead, 4 000 injured.
- Al-Qaeda network attacked US navy ship off coast of Yemen. Killed 17 soldiers.
