Q

When should you use preterite?

A

For actions in the past that are seen as completed and linked to the present. Use of preterite implies the past action had a definite beginning and definite end. The beginning and end are not necessarily clearly stated, only implied.

Q

When should you use imperfect?

A

For actions in the past that are not seen as completed. Specifically those without a definite beginning or end.
Situations that are covered by this rule include actions that were habitually repeated (lunching every day), set the stage for another action (I was eating when …) and telling time/age (It was 7 o’clock/she was five years old).
