Preferred for high strength grades. Can find important material properties such as the yield strength, elastic modulus and ultimate tensile strength.

Does not account for the bauschinger effect , added as a safety factor later on.

What is strain based design and what additional property requirements are placed on the material when using a strain based design approach?

A

Strain-based design sets strain limits in the design limits rather than stress based. Traditional stress limit design use the yield stress as the limit state where as strain based design uses the ultimate tensile limit.

It allows utilisation of longitudinal strain capacity, important parameters are the Yield/Tensile ratio, the strain hardening capacity and tensile strain capacity.
