What are Schneider’s first rank symptoms?
- Auditory hallucinations (2+ voices discussing them, thought echo, running commentary)
- thought disorder (insertion, withdrawl, broadcasting)
- delusional perceptions (normal stimulus leads to delusional insight e.g. delusions of reference)
- passivity phenomena - bodily sensations being controlled/actions/impulses/feelngs are being imposed
what are the negative symptoms of schizophrenia?
- blunted affect
- incongruity
- anhedoia
- alogia
- poor motivation
What 3 features must be present for a diagnosis of autism to be made?
- global impairment of language and communication
- impairment of social relationships
- ritualistic and compulsive behaviour
what screening tool is most appropriate for detecting post-natal depression?
the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale
how common is postnatal depression?
10% of women
what medication can be prescribed for postnatal depression?
Certain SSRIs e.g. sertraline or paroxetine - they are secreted in breast milk but not thought to be harmful to the infant
What are the most common side effect of SSRIs?
Gastrointestinal symptom
What are SSRI discontinuation symptoms?
- mood swings
- restlessness
- sleeping difficulty
- unsteadiness
- sweating
- GI pain cramping diarrhoea vomiting paraesthesia
Give the 4 main features of PTSD
- re-experiencing (of the event, intrusive, repetitive)
- avoidance (people, situations, places associated with event)
- hyperarousal (hypervigilance, startle response, difficulty concentrating)
- emotional numbing (feeling detached, lack of ability to experience feelings)
What psychological treatment is available for PTSD?
trauma focused CBT
eye movement desensitisation and reporocessing (EMDR)
